Prevention of Crisis Pregnancy
1. Funding Programme
The HSE Crisis Pregnancy Programme allocated €530,775 towards prevention related projects in 2009.
2. Public Communication: Prevention
The health promotion and education function of the Crisis Pregnancy Programme aims to develop effective approaches to contribute to the prevention of crisis pregnancy through a mix of communications initiatives, promotional activities and health education programmes.
Think Contraception
The Crisis Pregnancy Programme's three-year health promotion programme on prevention Think Contraception targets 18-24 year olds and aims to prevent unplanned pregnancy by reminding sexually active young adults that consistent use of contraception is the most effective way to prevent unplanned pregnancy. b4udecide Campaign
The b4udecide campaign aims to encourage teenagers to make healthy, responsible decisions about relationships and sex. It is aimed at teenagers aged between 14-16. It also aims to be a useful resource for parents, teachers and youth workers. The website, www.b4udecide.ie, features quizzes, polls and video interviews with young people on forming healthy relationships, dealing with peer pressure and why it’s better for young people to wait until they are older before having sex for the first time. Resources for Parents
In response to requests from parents and parent groups for help on how to begin talking to children about such relationships and sex, the Crisis Pregnancy Programme has developed a range of resources to assist parents in communicating with their children/teenagers about these topics. These resources include: the ‘Busy Bodies’ booklet for parents of 10-14 year olds; the ‘You can talk to me’ DVD and booklet for parents of 11-15 year olds. the ‘Parents, Tips for Talking to Older Teenagers’ supplement and ‘The Facts’ DVD for parents of older teenagers. Resources for Teachers and Youth Workers
The Crisis Pregnancy Programme in partnership with the Department of Education and Science has developed a Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) pack for teachers of senior cycle students in secondary schools. The Talking Relationships, Understanding Sexuality Teaching (TRUST) Resource comprises of a DVD and set of lesson plans. Training on the appropriate use of the resource is offered to all schools through the SPHE Support Service. Details of in-service training are available on www.sphe.ie or telephone 01 8057718.
‘The Facts’ was produced to help teachers, parents and youth workers to provide sex education to young people. Research Summary for Parents on Teenage Sexuality
The Crisis Pregnancy Programme has developed a research summary on teenage sexuality for parents and people working with young people. Listening to the views and the experiences of teenagers is essential to the work of the Crisis Pregnancy Programme. The Crisis Pregnancy Programme’s research reports on teenagers and sexuality in Ireland describe what teenagers in Ireland are saying about relationships, learning about sex, and the influence of television.
This summary of research findings is intended to provoke thought, discussion and interest among parents and those who work with young people. This resource was developed to serve as a reference document for front-line service providers regarding reproductive/sexual health and contraceptive methods. It also contains contact details for related services. Medical and/or pharmaceutical knowledge is not necessary in order to understand the information. The resource acts as an additional information support to the ‘Think Contraception’ leaflet and website, and the ‘Contraception 35-55’ leaflet.

Key Contact - Reproductive Health Information for Migrant Women: Pregnancy Prevention, Crisis Pregnancy Options, Related Health Matters
Reproductive Health Information for Migrant Women was launched in March 2006 and aims to meet the information needs of migrant women in relation to reproductive health care, including crisis pregnancy. It was developed by Treoir, the national federation of services for unmarried parents and their children, for use by those providing services to unmarried migrant women who are pregnant or parenting. Access to professional reproductive healthcare, advice and support is relevant for all women irrespective of age, social class, culture, ethnicity and background. Women need to know the options and support available to them in order to make an informed choice.
The resource is in English and six other languages – Arabic, Chinese, French, Polish, Romanian and Russian – and is also accompanied by a CD ROM which contains the information detailed in the document. If a woman needs information in her own language it can be printed out for her from the CD ROM.

Contraception 35-55 Leaflet
This leaflet informs women aged 35-55 of their contraception options, discusses sexual and reproductive health issues for this age group, including menstrual cycle changes, fertility changes and the perimenopause.
